SPECIAL MINISTRY GRANTS
Congregational Report - May 2007

Grants were promoted through the Communicator and pulpit starting in March. The deadline for grant applications was Friday, April 20th.

The Special Ministry Fund was set up to provide financial support for new and creative ministries addressing the following areas of our church life: Special Programs, Outreach/Benevolence, and Capital Improvement. While not a part of the original fund directives, we have attempted to divide the grants fairly evenly between the three categories when possible.

We are also mindful of including grants that are national and international in scope. We particularly encourage solutions for areas of need identified by congregation and synod initiatives; we ask but do not insist that grant requests come with the endorsement of at least one commission to support this shared visioning of our ministry. We consider multiple- year grants, but our objective is to fund one-time, start-up, or special needs projects without becoming part of a project's ongoing budget.

This is the last year members will be appointed by the chair; starting in 2008, cabinet has determined that the membership of this committee will consist of one member appointed from each commission with the chair appointed by Cabinet.

On behalf of the current committee, myself included, I'd like to thank you for your past support and for the opportunity to serve our congregation's mission in this very rewarding capacity.

Special Ministry Grant Committee
Congregational Report 2006

Committee members: Molly Breen, Dave Brostrom, Dave Christiansen, Julie Glowka, Raita Neely, Marvin Schindler, Carol Stinar, and chair, Jon Schumacher.

The Special Ministry Grants Committee received 16 applications totaling $31,325 for grant awards during its 2006 grant application cycle. The committee recommended our $18,850 of our allotted $18,892 to 10 different ministry initiatives.

Solicitations for grant applications were published in the Communicator and bulletin inserts on five consecutive Sundays and included in announcements during services. The deadline for grant applications was Friday, April 21.

The Special Ministry Fund was set up as an endowed Fund using the interest accrued annually to provide financial support for new and creative ministries addressing the following areas of our church life: Special Programs, Outreach/Benevolence, and Capital Improvement.

The committee welcomes applications that are local, national and international in scope. We particularly encourage long-range solutions for areas of need identified by congregation and synod initiatives. We will consider multiple-year grants, but our objective is to fund one-time, start-up, or special needs projects without becoming part of a project's ongoing budget.

Memorials and gifts to the Fund are encouraged and may be arranged by contacting the church office.

I thank all the applicants for their interest and commitment to new ministry. I would also like to thank my committee members for their time, input and thoughtful consideration.

The following chart details the applications, considerations, awards and contingencies. If there are any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.

Subject: Special Ministry Grants

Dear Cabinet members,

As some of you may know, I am still serving as chair of the Special Ministry Grants committee. We met last night to talk about improving our process and one of the ways to do that is to get the word out to people who are in the midst of ministry initiatives that might be in need of outside-the-budget funding.

What could be a better group to inform about that kind of thing than you all?!

Did you know that our old van was partially purchased and paid for by a 3-year Special Ministry grant? Or that we helped to finance a copy machine for the Slovakian school where the Jamiesons worked last year? And helped pay for Pastor Moberg's China trip?
Those initiatives along with dozens of others have helped support ministries locally, nationally.

To help you put on your thinking caps, I've attached the announcement that has been appearing in the Communicator and bulletin insert for your perusal. If you have a commission meeting between now and the deadline, please brainstorm per the grant requirements to find creative ways to put this money toward your ministry objectives. If you don't plan to meet, perhaps you could have an email or telephone conversation with your members.

Our allotted amount for this year is slightly over $14,000.

If you have any questions, feel free to email or call. I will be out of the country from April 2-15, but you can also talk to Dave Christianson, Dave Brostrom or Julie Glowka during that time.

Thanks for all the good work you are doing,

Jon Schumacher
