Reader Functions

Reader Functions

Prior to the Sunday when you will be reading, obtain a bulletin from the church office; either pick it up or call the church office to have one mailed to you.

Your tribe leader or church administrator will mail you the texts for your Sunday. The texts may be photocopied from the lectionary, the same version you will find in the lectern. If you decide to read out of a Bible instead of the bulletin or lectionary , be sure it is the same translation.

Read the lessons aloud several times at home during the week. If you have questions about pronunciation or interpretation, ask someone, i.e. a pastor.

  1. Arrive at church early so that you can talk with the pastor about any last minute changes.

  2. Sit near the pulpit and step up to the pulpit immediately after the Prayer for the Day.

  3. Read clearly and directly and loudly into the microphone.

  4. Begin by saying,

"The first lesson is from the _____chapter of _____."

After reading the lesson, say, "The Word of the Lord."

  5. If there is an anthem, special music, etc. return to your chair.

After its completion, return to the pulpit and say, "The second lesson is from the ____chapter of _____."

After reading the lesson, say, "The Word of the Lord."

  6. Return to your seat. If you must leave the sanctuary or move to another place, please wait to do so until the entire congregation stands for the reading of the Gospel .
